7 Ways the HR Team Can Help Staff With Shifting Schedule

Shifting schedules not only increases overall company productivity. It also maximizes company profit and resources. However, rotating the shifts of existing employee schedule is not an easy adjustment to the staff. If their body clock is used to a daily morning routine, their bodies would not be happy to accept a night shift.

Most of the adjustment comes from the staff, but they can only do so much. Management can offer support to employees who need to report at odd working hours at 6750 Ayala Avenue office. As part of HR and management, here are ten tips to help staff adjust to their new schedule.

1. Make night schedules predictable.

As much as possible, don't allow an employee or the staff to receive night shifts consecutively. Night schedules can be on the first week and third week or the second and fourth week of the month. It can also be once a week. Once the schedule of each employee is set, ensure to plot in the calendar or employee to list to take note of the frequency of their graveyard shifts.

2. Provide work schedules based on business needs.

Night shift isn't always necessary for a few industries. Service-oriented businesses, for instance, must have shifting work schedules to meet client demands, company quota, and other deliverables. Do not require a night shift or overtime work if the staff can finish their job within their daily shift. Check the company's needs and survey company operations first before changing each employee's work schedule.

3. Refrain assigning double shifts and overtime work to staff working in rotating shifts.

Working with a rotating shift is difficult. The working hours and days can be unpredictable. Not everyone on board can enjoy their weekends. Avoid burnout and schedule complications by removing double shifts or overtime work from their roster.

4. Provide better lighting in the working area.

Use desk lamps, recessed lights and other types of lighting fixtures to brighten the working area. Provide bulbs and lamps with cool lighting to make the staff focused on their work. Add a dimming switch to optimize the brightness. Besides lights, monitor screens are also sources of light. Prolonged exposure to blue light can cause eye strain and headaches. Provide monitors with adjustable brightness, contrast, and a night or game mode feature to enhance warm tones.

5. Set breaks, nap time and flextime options.

Encourage your employees to nap on the job. Several BPO offices in Makati City have sleeping quarters so employees can recover from their rotating shifts. Other companies implement breaks in between the one hour meal time to help people unwind and regain their focus on the job. Meanwhile, some offer flexitime options to allow employees to catch up on their personal life and home duties. Flexitime minimizes inconveniences and distractions while on the job.

6. Offer after-shift and weekend health and wellness programs.

Yoga, Zumba, and other classes at the gym keep the staff healthy and energized. It also gives them a chance to do something besides work. They will appreciate the free offer as they reap the benefits of being active. In return, they become more determined to work.

7. Require regular physical exams.

Physical exams let the management especially the staff know the state of their human capital. For people to perform and work, they must be in their tip-top shape. Require them to get and submit their physical exam results on time to assess if they are still fit to work. Remind them to use their medical cards if they worry about the costs of the medical tests.

Shifting schedule can be easy for management and staff when they work together. Adapting to a rotating work time can difficult for the employee. When the HR manages to help and use these changes to improve their office environment, overall productivity in workplace increases.
