Apartments is one of the few popular forms of housing in the Philippines. What makes an apartment very popular is their cost. Compared to buying a house, apartments are usually rented, which makes it easier for people to afford a type of housing. Compared to condominiums, apartments are also known to be much more affordable. So what is an apartment and why is it affordable?

Types of Apartments
An apartment is a type of housing in which one unit of a building is rented to one or more individual. If a building is made up of many apartment units, then the building is usually known as an apartment building. Apartments are usually rented by tenants, however, there are cases in the Philippines and in some parts of the world in which an apartment unit is owned by its occupier.

According to many Real estate Philippines professionals, apartments are divided into many different types. The first one, and basically the most popular type, is the studio type apartment. A studio apartment, also known as a studio flat (UK), efficiency apartment or bachelor/bachelorette style apartment, is a self-contained, small apartment, which combines living room, bedroom and kitchenette into a single unit, barring a bathroom.

Studio, efficiency, and bachelor style apartments all tend to be the smallest apartments with the lowest rents in a given area, usually ranging around 300 to 600 square feet (25-60 square meters). Kitchen facilities may be located in the central room, and the bathroom is often in its own smaller room. Other than the studio type apartments, there is also the one-bedroom apartments.

The major difference of a one-bedroom apartment from a studio is that these types of apartments tend to be larger, with one room separate from the rest of the unit. Then there are also the two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartments which tends to be larger than their predecessor. Small apartments often have only one entrance whereas larger ones may include more than one.

Garden Apartment Complexes
Other than the studio type and one-bedroom types of apartments, there is also an apartment called a garden apartment. According to Real estate Philippines specialists, garden apartment complexes usually consists of low-rise apartment buildings built with landscaped grounds surrounding them. The apartment buildings are often arranged around courtyards that are open at one end.

A garden apartment has some characteristics of a townhouse: each apartment has its own building entrance, or just a few apartments share a small foyer or stairwell at each building entrance. However, the difference is that each apartment only occupies one level of the building.
